The digitized PLSS notes and plats available here were collected and compiled by the Hoosier Hills Chapter of ISPLS and the Office of the Monroe County Surveyor. Counties within the Hoosier Hills Chapter area and those counties that are adjacent to Monroe County are the focus of this project, which is expected to be complete by the spring of 2020. Additional datasets will be considered for inclusion if they are provided using the same file naming convention described below. All available files can be downloaded at once by clicking “Original” at the bottom of “Download Options.” This project is ongoing; please check back often for updates!
In Indiana, there are three to four sets of "original" PLSS notes and plats. The field survey set, which was originally written by the field surveyor is available at the Indiana State Archive for approximately 30% of the counties in Indiana. The GLO transcribed the federal set (available at the National Archives) and the state set (available at the Indiana State Archive). The State Auditor later transcribed the state set for each county surveyor.
The file name prefix indicates the source of the field notes and plats available for download here, where F is the Federal set, O is the Original set, S is the State set, and C is the County set. The file name also contains the unique geographic location, where PM02 is the 2nd Principle Meridian, T**N is the Township, and R**E or W is the Range.
Made possible by Clayton Hogston, Lorraine Wright, Rachel Oser, Donna Barbrick, Trohn Enright-Randolph, the Office of the Monroe County Surveyor, the Indiana State Archives, the Indiana Geological Survey, HubTack, Inc., and a grant from the Hoosier Hills Chapter of ISPLS, Inc., the Indiana Professional Land Surveyors Foundation, Inc., the Monroe County Surveyor - Trohn Enright-Randolph, the Lawrence County Surveyor - Corey Allen, the Jennings County Surveyor - Chad Ebinger, the Jackson County Surveyor - Daniel Blann, the Bartholomew County Surveyor - E.R. The federal notes and plats available here will eventually be assigned permanent URLs by Indiana University and added to the IndianaMap.org by the Indiana Geographic Information Council.
